Welsh for Wellbeing: A New Space to Learn, Connect and Celebrate Our Heritage

We’re excited to announce a brand-new group beginning at our Wellbeing Centre in January: Welsh for Wellbeing. Starting Thursday 8th January, the group will run every Thursday from 2–3pm at Tŷ Croeso, 48 Free Street, Brecon.

Welsh for Wellbeing is more than a language class. It’s a warm, informal space where people of all abilities, complete beginners to fluent speakers, can come together to learn, grow and practise in a friendly, non-judgemental environment. There’s no pressure, no strict curriculum and no expectation to ‘get it right’. Instead, our focus is on connection, confidence and enjoyment.

Language helps shape how we see the world, and how we see ourselves. In Wales, the Welsh language is deeply woven into our heritage, our landscape and our identity. Many people feel a strong emotional connection to the language – even if they don’t speak it (yet!). The sounds, stories and expressions of Welsh tie us to our ancestors, to our communities and to a shared sense of belonging.

When we engage with Welsh, we’re not just learning vocabulary, we’re reconnecting with culture, memory and a sense of place. And that connection can be profoundly supportive of our mental wellbeing.

Research and lived experience both show that cultural identity can boost confidence, self-esteem and resilience. Reclaiming or practising the Welsh language can bring pride, comfort and joy. For some, it’s a way of honouring family heritage; for others, it’s a step toward feeling part of Welsh life; and for many, it simply opens the door to new friendships, creativity and fun. Welsh for Wellbeing aims to nurture exactly that.

The sessions will be relaxed and drop-in, with activities shaped by the interests and abilities of the group. Some weeks we may focus on everyday conversation, other weeks on place names, local history, simple songs or games. The idea is to enjoy learning without pressure, and to support one another along the way.

We’re especially keen to welcome participants with all levels of Welsh, including those who are confident or fluent. In fact, we hope that Welsh for Wellbeing becomes a shared space where more experienced speakers naturally take on friendly, supportive roles—helping beginners, guiding activities and passing on their own knowledge and love for the language.

To help make this happen, we are also looking to recruit one or two Welsh-speaking volunteers to help shape and run the group. Volunteers will have the chance to contribute ideas, develop themes for sessions, help structure the activities and, importantly, offer gentle guidance to learners at all stages. If you enjoy supporting others, value the Welsh language and would like to help foster a positive, uplifting community space, we’d love to hear from you.

Welsh for Wellbeing is open to everyone so come along, say helo, and be part of a growing, supportive space where language, culture and community come together to lift our wellbeing.
