Supporting the Next Generation: International Youth Day at Brecon & District Mind

Today is International Youth Day; a global celebration of young people’s potential, creativity, and resilience. Here at Brecon & District Mind, we’re treating it as a timely reminder that we all play a part in supporting young people’s mental health.

Young People Need Accessible, Trusted Support

Growing numbers of young people in the UK are facing greater mental health challenges than ever before. As Mind highlights, teens and young adults now make up nearly half of those seeking mental health support from NHS services. The Times

Mind also campaigns for faster access to early help, because delays can lead to deeper crises, such as hospital stays. Mind

Our Work with Young People in Brecon

At Brecon & District Mind, we’re responding locally to this increase in demand.

Wellbeing workshops at Brecon High School; every Friday during term, we facilitate two small-group sessions of up to 10 pupils. Topics, including stress, anxiety, self-esteem, sleep, and low mood, are chosen by the pupils themselves to ensure they’re relevant and supportive. The sessions, run by our CYP lead Lisa, are informal and inclusive – and of course come with drinks and biscuits.

Mindful lunchtime walks; also on Fridays at 2 pm, open to all pupils. One participant summed it up:

“I feel ready for the next lesson now.”

Trusted Help Starts with Choice and Access

Mind’s ‘For Young People’ hub offers a wealth of accessible resources such as help with talking to friends or professionals, first steps for getting support, how to understand CAMHS, and more. It reminds young people they aren’t alone and do deserve support

How to Get Involved in Brecon – High School

  • Lunchtime Walks: Just turn up at reception at 2 pm on Fridays.
  • Wellbeing Workshops: Speak to your year head to join a 6-week group.
  • All Sessions: Completely free.

So, this International Youth Day, let’s honour the strength and creativity of young people in our community. By offering local, accessible spaces for wellbeing, we can help ensure they thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.

Feel free to share this post with any Brecon High School pupils who might benefit from walking or workshops.

We’re always looking to learn more about the needs of our local community, and to respond to those needs to the best of our ability. If you have any thoughts or ideas about youth-based services in Brecon and the surrounding area, please email us admin@breconmind.org.uk or via our contact page
