Coping with Results Day Pressure: You’re More Than Your Grades
GCSE results were released yesterday, following A-level results last week, and for many young people this can feel like one of the biggest milestones of their lives. Whether you’re celebrating or feeling disappointed, results day often comes with a lot of pressure.
It’s important to remember that your grades don’t define you. They’re just one step on your journey, and there are always different routes forward. Here are some tips that might help you manage the stress and look after your wellbeing:
1. Try not to compare yourself to others
It can be tempting to check in with friends about their grades, or to scroll through social media and compare your results with others. But this often adds to the pressure. Focus on your own path — everyone’s journey is different.
2. Keep perspective
Exam results are important, but they aren’t the whole story. Your skills, strengths and passions go far beyond grades. Remember: you can only do your best, and each new day is a chance to start again.
3. Have a plan B
Whatever your results, there are always different options — from retakes to apprenticeships, new courses or different career paths. Exploring your choices can help you feel more in control.
4. Talk it through
Sharing how you’re feeling with friends, family or teachers can help ease the pressure. If you’re struggling, don’t hesitate to reach out for professional support.
5. Take a break
Do something you enjoy to take your mind off results stress. It could be sport, gaming, music, reading, or simply spending time with friends. Setting phone or app breaks can also help if you find yourself scrolling and comparing.
6. Plan something positive
Arrange an activity you can look forward to after results day — whether that’s a meal out, a favourite hobby, or time with friends. Having something fun on the horizon can help keep things in perspective.
If you’re finding results day overwhelming, you’re not alone.
